Elementary Pilot (EP) is the first BHPA level of competence. By the end of the EPC, you will be able to:

  • Take off and land un-assisted in moderate conditions
  • Fly at appropriate airspeed
  • Make smooth turns to at least 90 degrees
  • Choose and carry out simple flight plans
  • Pass the EP theory exam

After completing the EP you can progress to the next stage: the Club Pilot course

Club Pilot (CP) is the BHPA level of competence required to fly without direct instruction, within a club environment. By the end of the CPC, you will be able to:

  • Ground handle - inflate and control your paraglider on the ground in the full range of flyable wind conditions
  • Take-off and land in the full range of flyable wind conditions, from light to moderately strong winds
  • Use your canopy's full range of airspeed appropriately
  • Make 180 degree turns
  • Carry out hill-side and top landings
  • Fly safely with other pilots
  • Demonstrate understanding of the concept of "active flying"
  • Deal with small asymmetric tucks and carry out the "big ears" rapid descent technique
  • Pass the CP theory exam.

You will also have at least 30 minutes of soaring flights and will have gained further theoretical knowledge of Meteorology, Principles of Flight, Air Law and General Airmanship. Most importantly, you will have shown your instructors that that you have a sufficiently responsible attitude to paragliding to leave the school environment without posing an unacceptable risk to yourself or others.

Once you are CP qualified, you can join a local BHPA club (or clubs) and fly on their sites. Clubs cannot train you any further but the BHPA club coaching system has been devised to help you progress.

At Cloudbase we build relationships to last. Once you are qualified you might just say goodbye and we’ll say good luck. Lots of people just want to get on with flying. The BHPA scheme includes a progression to the clubs and all clubs have qualified coaches who can help you.

However, we know that lots of people find the transition to independent flying quite daunting or challenging so at Cloudbase we can offer post Club Pilot qualified pilots support on our Pilot/UK Cross Country course. We’ll keep an eye on you, give you tasks and challenges to improve your skills and ultimately send you away to fly confidently, competently and safely.

The cousre is three days long with one day allocated to theory in classroom and two days allocated to practical flying on the hill. You will complete the theory prior to the practical and Cloudbase will select a non flying day for this. First theory weekends are 8th/9th April with a back up of 15th/16th. Each course is limited to 10 studentsand costs £185

Practical flying will be done on an adhoc basis and would generally be conducted on a RASP 3* day or better but its not limited to that. Flying areas would normally be in Wiltshire, Hampshire, Berkshire and Wales. Cloudbase will try and give at least 3 days notice of any flyable day and will offer a maximum of 10 flying days for you to complete your two days.
